how refreshing, only one small mention of the williams sisters. Bout time people realize, tennis does not begin and end with them.

Apparently seven of the eight top-ranked women's tennis players are skipping LA, so Dinara Safina's strongest competition will probably come from the players ranked 7-15 plus the "Ovas," Daniela Hantuchova (26) and Maria Sharapova (61).
Players skipping LA include:
Serena (2) and Venus (3) Williams
Elena Dementieva (4)
Jelena Jankovich (5)
Svetlana Kuznetsova (6)
Most of these players (along with virtually all the top male tennis stars) are scheduled to compete in the 111-year old Cincinnati tournament which starts on Saturday. The LA tournament wraps up on Sunday, with the semifinal scheduled for Saturday, so I assume that some kind of first-round exceptions will apply to any LA semifinalists and finalists who are also appearing at Cincinnati (quite a few players are competing in both).
