NEW YORK (AP) -- Roger Federer has been fined $1,500 for using a profanity while arguing with the chair umpire during the U.S. Open final.CBS microphones picked up the exchange during its live broadcast of the match.
Tournament spokesman Chris Widmaier says Federer is being docked the same amount as two other players -- Vera Zvonareva and Daniel Koellerer -- for audible obscenity.

Widmaier says a total of $31,500 in fines is being collected by the tournament, topped by Serena Williams' $10,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct. She also was fined $500 for racket abuse.
Daniel Nestor was docked $5,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct toward a fan.

It seemed to me that the officiating at the open was very sloppy this year. Lines people making wrong calls. Umpires overruling calls and being wrong.
I wonder how they can even call lines with speeds of 100mph and more. How can they even see the ball land? The sport may have out lived the usefulness of lines people. Electronic may be the way to go(sadly so).
Then there was the late tournament weather that added stress to everyone.

If CBS had gone to commercial break like they were suppose to, we would have never known what he said and this wouldn't even been an issue. After Federer sat down, the camera stayed focused on him and caught everything he said and then they went to commercial break after he dropped the F-bomb.

I don't see you bloggers calling Federer names like you bashed Serena Williams. If this article was about the William Sisters there would be over two blogs posted, with more on the way. Why is that? Let's not kid ourselves it pure RACE.

To dxxy4u: It seems like you and your "type" can't stand not to be hacking on about race. You are obviously obsessed with the topic, as are so many others in the USA, that you seem absolutely uncomfortable without an opportunity to start labeling someone else a racist. So you do it anyway.

What Serena did was wrong...she vocalized a direct threat. I love her, she's great, I don't care if she was purple...but she said "I am gonna take this Fu*king ball and shove it down your fu*king throat!." Umm... bad idea.
Federer asked the idiot official if he "had any rules." When he did this, the official put his hand out and told Federer to 'be quiet'. BE QUIET?? DID AN OFFICIAL EVER TELL MICHAEL JORDAN TO 'BE QUIET'?? NO!! Because Jordan was God of his sport and so is Federer. That official should have been grateful to share the same space with Roger Federer. He could have engaged in a responsible discussion with Federer as to why he was repeatedly bending the rules and allowing Del Potro time to protest calls after he looked at his coaches in the stands. That was illegal. NOBODY tells Roger to "be quiet".. WTF??

It is a shame that both Serena and Roger got away with such little fines. It is a disgrace to the game when such things occur, and then on top such meager fines. They should have been fined heftily. They can all afford it. The message should be that such language, threats and all have no place in professional sports. $10,000 and $1,500 are nothing for them.

To bgy1.. You got a point there. What gives the official the right to tell a grown individual to "be quiet". And no, an official never told MJ to be quiet because he wouldn't have had a job afterwards. Serena was wrong even though I applaud her for it. How many times have you wanted to tell someone who thinks they have the authority of your way of life to "fuck off"!! there are people out there right now that tries to control everything about you. You see them at work!!

I understand Serena's tirade but it was too much. Federer was upset too, but can't you see why he was upset? How many times in tennis has a play been allowed to be challenged right when you are about to sit down? Federer also didn't swear directly at the Official, but the biggest difference was he didn't appear to be a threat.
I do agree that the call on Serena was absurd and a call like that needs to be as clear as day in a situation like that.

That's nothing.During that match,Federer challenged a call that Del Potro hit after hearing "OUT" from the stands from a fan. However,he challenged it after MORE than 10 seconds. He walked over slowly and looked at the mark. And then he challenged. It's unfair that they still gave him the point. But when Del Potro challenged within the 10 seconds,it was supposed to be his point cuz the ball that Federer hit was OUT.Still, they did NOT give Del Potro that point. Based on that conflict,I think it's quite unfair.
