INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- Somebody take Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi out back and give them both a spanking.A quarter of a million people dead in Haiti, and Sampras and Agassi took a charity event to raise money for earthquake victims and turned it into a night about themselves and their stupid bickering over Agassi calling Sampras a bad tipper.
For Pete's sake, what an embarrassment.
"Wow, you got personal,'' Sampras said to Agassi, getting upset. "You got personal with me.''
"It's all fun and games,'' Agassi said, "until someone gets hurt.''
What the hell is the matter with these two?
Let me back up. Tennis tried to show that it had a heart Friday night, that it's not all about self-absorbed, entitled athletes, as its image often says. Eight legends of the game past and present, came together for an event called Hit for Haiti. They raised $1 million.
And at the start of the men's event, Agassi stood next to Rafael Nadal by the side of the court, and Sampras walked in, and then Roger Federer, and you could not help but to get chills.
Rod Laver came for the coin toss, and Federer took off his ballcap in respect.
This was going to be one special night.
Instead, Sampras and Agassi humiliated themselves, humiliated tennis. These two actually got upset with each other, and shared it with a sold-out crowd of 16,000 people. Keep in mind, the players wore microphones, and they knew their little hissy fits were going out to the world.
"Andre, Andre, Andre,'' Nadal said a few games before the bickering started, apparently sensing the tensions building. "Stop with the lip.''
It is almost unbelievable what happened Friday night. Sampras and Agassi acted like the overly drunk guy at the party, leaving everyone else feeling uncomfortable and just praying for the moment to end. I mean, thank God for Martina Navratilova, who, apparently is a wonderful human being. Same with Lindsay Davenport. In fact, all four women who took the court first, including Steffi Graf and Justine Henin all were in the spirit.
Selfless. Caring. Jovial.
Just a couple hours earlier, Henin had lost her way out of the real tournament in a shocking upset to Gisela Dulko. But there she was on court, smiling, thanking the crowd and saying it was an honor to be there.
And thank God for Nadal and Federer, too. They all did give of themselves and did raise money and help people. That's the most important thing. But it was not the impression anyone left with.
When the bickering started, Nadal stood quietly, smiling. And Federer tried to lighten the moment, saying to him, "This rivalry's intense, man.''
Federer knew why he was there. Everyone else did, really.
Agassi gave running sarcastic commentary the whole night, poking little insults at all three others, telling Nadal that he runs faster on TV than in person. Stuff like that.
Basically, he was having fun and doing exactly what he should have been doing. He and Nadal were beating Federer and Sampras, and then, with pride starting to step in, Sampras started giving a little more effort.
"You always have to get serious, huh Pete?'' Agassi said.
Remember, Agassi ripped Sampras in his book, Open, late last year, saying that Sampras was as robotic as his parrot, Peaches. Agassi also wrote that he and Sampras were in the same restaurant once, and when Sampras left, Agassi got the valet to confide to him that Sampras had tipped him just one buck.
The restaurant, by the way, was right here in Indian Wells.
Sampras had been upset about the book, and said a few weeks ago that he and Andre needed to talk man-to man.
"OK Andre, I'll joke around a little bit,'' said Sampras through his mic. "I'm going to imitate you.''
Then Sampras stood pigeon-toed and started waddling, the way Agassi walks.
I'm pretty sure I saw smoke come through Agassi's teeth.
"Say something,'' Sampras said. "Say it.''
"I want to impersonate you,'' Agassi said.
He pulled out his pockets and said, "I don't have any money. I just like ... I ... ''
"Oh,'' Sampras said. "About my tipping? OK.''
"No,'' Agassi said. "No wait. I've got a dollar.''
Sampras: "That's how you want to play, huh?''
It seemed that these guys understood the "Hit'' part of the night, but not the "for Haiti'' part.
Federer tried to step in. Agassi said it was all right.
And then Sampras cracked a serve at Agassi's head.
I did not make that up. It was one of those half-tongue-in-cheek, half-temper tantrum things. Maybe 40-60.
Think about this: Everyone was here for charity, for other people.
Other. People.
"You know what,'' Agassi said. "It's better than being a valet driver when you pull up.''
"Let's talk about our baggage,'' Sampras said, referring to Agassi's book. "There we go. I'm a bad tipper. I'm sorry Barack Obama.''
I could talk a little here about rivalries, and how intense they can be. But that's not what this was about.
It was about two people acting like idiots.
And don't get the idea that maybe these guys were just joking, part of an act. Maybe at first, for 30 seconds or so. After that, it got very real.
Share You should have felt the night at that point. You know the cliché about the air leaving a building? That happened. The place went dead silent. The fans were shocked, embarrassed for their sports heroes.
The Tennis Channel's Justin Gimelstob came on court and tried to make things better, only making them 10,000 times worse.
"Hey guys, that got a little awkward,'' he said. "Let's have a Dr. Phil moment.''
"All for Haiti, baby,'' Agassi said.
"I don't know where he got that from,'' Sampras said. "But you know, whatever.''
Federer and Sampras won 8-6, and when it was over Sampras met Agassi at the net with open arms. They hugged.
Too bad they couldn't fake it like that all night. Too bad these legends let their little feelings get hurt on a night like this.

What a pathetic interpretation of what actually occurred. Sampras was his usual reserved self until provoked by that jerk Agassi, who has spent his self indulgent life faking concern over the poor folks. I can't imagine how anyone could have simply allowed Agassi to make insulting comments without finally defending himself.
Agassi was the one who instigated the exchange. Sampras merely defended himself.
I think this just shows that they are both pathetic losers and gives great indication of why American tennis is a joke. Thank goodness that we don't ever have to see these parcels of garbage anymore.
But the sex afterward was awesome !!
You know... I like both players and I grew up playing tennis admiring both of them for (obvious) different reasons. I usually leaned toward Agassi because he was closer to my own personailty but had to respect Pete's mental and technical mastery of the game. If you just read what happened it can be misleading. Agassi really showed his butt. It is a shame that he can not only be disrespectful for the game that millions of us love but to be disrespectful to the reason they were there to begin with. As much as I did not like Pete's personality on court when I was growing up... I have to say that he handled himself quite well compared to what I would have done in that situation... that ball WOULD HAVE hit Agassi!!
You don't have a clue in the world. Andre Agassi is one of the most giving people on the planet. Google him numbnuts and read about what all he has done for others and then maybe you'll feel more intellectually challenged than a first grader and more enlightened. Next time know more of what you are talking about.
Pete is a self centered all about pete person. Where was he when it was time to play for his country. He only thought about making money, just like a good republican.
FIRST: WHO CARES????
SECOND: When will everyone who THINKS they are doing a "good deed" for a bunch of people who HATED THE UNITED STATES until they got hit with the earthquake STOP THE STUPIDITY???!!! Yes, ANYONE who tries to do one iota more for those people should get their respective asses kicked!!! WE HAVE OUR OWN PROBLEMS IN THE UNITED STATES!!! We have poverty to the extent that many AMERICANS -- THE REAL KIND, NOT THESE ILLEGAL IMPORTS -- NEED HELP AND THE US Government IS NOT RAPIDLY HELPING THEM:!!! Yea, OK, it was a terrible situation and we should have gone TO HELP THEM AND THEN LEAVE!!! IT'S THEIR PROBLEM, NOT OURS!!! If the United Nations wants to help then have at it but THE UNITED STATES SHOULD BE OUT OF THERE BY NOW--PERIOD!!! Besides, MOST of the money and supplies that have been collected/taken to them has been LOST TO THE BLACK MARKET AND THE SO CALLED OFFICIALS WHO ARE EXTREMELY CORRUPT!! It was interesting to see that when John Travolta did a wonderful thing and flew supplies and personnel to the place HE HAD TO MAKE SURE THAT THE SUPPLIES GOT TO WHERE THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO BE -- HE EVEN STAYED WITH THEM UNTIL THEY WERE DELIVERED. An American Doctor was seen, on an NBC report, SCREAMING about how the graft was so prevelant that the medical supplies on a plane were just sitting until someone came up with money for the bastards that were "running" the airport, CHARGING A "TAX" !!!??? WAKE UP AMERICA. CLEAN UP YOUR OWN YARD FIRST. CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME, GET IT?? AT HOME, and I mean THE REAL AMERICANS, NOT THE ILLEGALS!!!
I'm with bigwolverine! All of Agassi's concern for poor kids must be fake--that's why he actually BUILT A SCHOOL for them. Or do you think the school is a hologram or made out of cardboard or something? But I do agree with you that Greg Couch provided a very poor interpretation of what actually went on. These guys are brothers, they've been ribbing each other for decades, and as usual, one brother is tougher (Agassi) and the other is a bit of a wuss (Pete) and he got his wittle feeweings all hurt when it went further than he wanted it to. I think everything was OK until after he hit the serve at Agassi, but when Andre said "It's better than having you pull up to the valet." is when Pete felt it went too far, which is silly since it was basically more of the same and not much of, if any of, an escalation of insults. And for anyone who thinks it 'turned violent' when Pete hit the serve at him, you are wrong. For one, I've been watching these guys for long enough to know that, even though he's retired, if Pete actually WANTED to hit Andre, he would have. And while I'm no pro, I've played tennis most of my life and that's what guys do when they're messing around (like in any sport), especially when they have such excellent control.
The fact that this damn writer claims that being sarcastic is exactly what Agassi should have been doing and that sarcasm should be viewed as harmless fun makes me want to question his character. The cartoon these days are highly sarcastic and yet we wonder why so many of our children are rude and ill-mannered. When you start being sarcastic as a young person you end up being a smart alick adult. Agassi was there for charity and to have fun, not to throw insults at others. If you have nothing good or constructive to say, you should not be talking! Perhaps Pete could have kept his composure better, I do not know; I was not there. But I do know, after a while, people get tired of the bs!
Too bad. Agassi blew it last night. I still love Federer and Rafa rocks. The "old bald guys" just made the two current rivals look cooler and underscored their appropriate sportsman-like conduct. Navaratilova and Agassi talk too much.
What match did you watch?! It wasn't Sampras that was acting like an idiot it was Agassi. Agassi was the embarrassment not Sampras. I thought Sampras held his composure as best as he could given the situation. If I were him I would had ripped Agassi a new one and told him to go back to the locker room and do some more drugs. Also...you failed to mention the serve Agassi purposely hit right at Federer earlier in the match. Let's not just attack Sampras. I used to LOVE Andre Agassi. I was very disappointed in some things from his book but I didn't lose complete and utter respect for him until last night. He was truly classless. My respect for Sampras has not been tarnished in the least.
If you really watched the video about the whole incidence, you will find that Agassi is really the loser and an instigator. Sampras was holding his composure and it's Agassi who didn't want to quit and kept provoking him. He showed no remorse at all and kept talking and had to have the last word. He even twisted around and implied Sampras was the one who tried to get personal and actually Agassi was the one who tried to get personal instead a harmless joke. Somehow I always think that Agassi is a hypocrite. Not only that he was a loser while playing tennis against Sampras in the old days. What happened also showed he is classless and a bigger loser in real life. I seriously believe what Agassi did is a result of most of his losing battles to Sampras in tennis and jealousy. Agassi is also a hypocrite, believe it or not!
We thought Hollywood had a monoply on moronic behavior, we were wrong.
I'm a big fan of both. But can somebody explain me what the heck is going on w/ Andre?? Sampras showed great class and composure minutes after the incident. Sure he got upset. But who wouldn't? Moments later, instead of bringing up Agassi's lying and drug abuse, he opted for "I love you man". On the other hand, Agassi didn't even acknowledge the comment, didn't apologize, and left the venue seconds after stepping off the court.
writer is an idiot for grouping sampras in with agassi in being unreasonable and classless. sampras was classy as always and could have said a lot worse...agassi's behavior was disgusting and clearly fueled by jealousy, envy, and bitterness. once again, writer is a tool.
Sampras has always been a class act. He kept his cool a whole lot better than I would have done. If it had been me, I would have told Agassi I couldn't impersonate him because I didn't have a woman's wig and a pocketful of meth.
...or a French Open Trophy
Who cares about the French Open. Playing on clay only results in long, boring baseline rallys. Real men play on fast surfaces. And I realize that the French Open is considered a grand slam tournament, but it really is the least important of the four. Just compare the world television ratings for the French Open versus the ratings for Wimbledon.
It's kind of funny that noone has mentioned Martina's constant digs at Steffi. Perhaps because Steffi handled them better?
